Baptism
At Southway, we practice what is known as “Believer’s Baptism,” in addition to baptism by immersion. One of the first ways new believers show their faith in Jesus is to follow Him by baptism. Baptism is one of the first steps of obedience in one’s journey with Jesus, and is worth celebrating. If you are interested in baptism or have questions about baptism, we have a baptism packet at your request. Just email us at office@southway.org and we can send out our packet electronically or through snail mail. Below are some fast-facts about baptism.
Is baptism necessary for salvation? No it is not. However, baptism symbolizes your salvation, and shows people outwardly what God has done inwardly. Baptism illustrates us sharing in Christ’s death and resurrection as we go down into the water and are raised out of the water. As stated earlier, baptism is an act of obedience to Jesus Christ but not necessary for Christ’s gift of salvation.
Who should be baptized? Professing Christians should be baptized. If you have placed your faith in Jesus Christ to reconcile you to God based on the cross and empty tomb, then you should and can be baptized.
Does Southway practice infant baptism? Due to our belief that only believers in Jesus Christ are to be baptized, Southway does not practice infant baptism. We do joyfully schedule “baby dedications” which are powerful and moving times where parents and our church family agree to raise their child in a Christian home and atmosphere.
What is the process to be baptized? The baptism process at Southway is easy and simple. First, indicate a desire for baptism through your SCC Connections sheet at any Sunday worship gathering. Second, schedule a meeting with Jason to talk about your desire for baptism, and the planning/scheduling of your baptism (including date, time, what to wear, and other particulars). Finally, your baptism will be scheduled and we’ll celebrate with you on your special day!
